This week Sony officially announced Skype for PSP Slim&Lite, but when we first heard the news there was no word on why the PSP-1000 wasn’t getting a Skype update. Sony announced that the original PlayStation Portable can’t run Skype because it only has 32 MB internal memory, while the new PSP Slim and Lite has 64 MB. Thanks to this memory Sony was able to make Skype run smoothly on the sexy PSP Slimline.

PSP Light, PSP-2000, PSP Battery, Firmware Update, UMD, Universal Media DiscSony has released a smaller PSP Firmware update coded 3.73. You can download this new PSP system software now via Network Update. The only thing it does is that it improves the operation of the UMD drive to adress cases in which the UMD drive occasionally suspends and fails to reload data. Updating to Firmware 3.73 should kill this failure.

After the pretty neat announcement of Remote Play Applications for PSP Slim&Lite and PS3 Kas Hirai from Sony Computer Entertainment has announced a version of the PlayStation Store accessible by PCs. Japanese gamers can already start downloading original PlayStation One games for the PlayStation Portable without having to use a PlayStation 3 to connect to the PlaySation Store (PSS). Too bad we Americans and Europeans can’t use the Japanese PlayStation Store, let’s hope there will be a US and European version of the PSS in the future.

During the Tokyo Game Show Kazi Hirai from Sony Computer Entertainment used a PlayStation Portable to turn a PlayStation 3 on over the Internet. The new feature will soon be available in a future firmware update. You’ll also be able to put your PS3 asleep using the new PSP Slim&Lite. Other Remote Play Applications is using your PSP as a second screen in the Formula 1 Racing game and using multiple PSP Slimline’s as PlayStation 3 controllers. Sony is planning more multimedia options and connectivity between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

The new PSP Slim and Lite Firmware, version 3.71, is now available for download via a network update command from your XMB. According to Sony, this new Firmware will give your PSP Slim&Lite new, user-requested features but we haven’t noticed any cool new features yet. The 3.71 Firmware is probably just a security fix that Sony wants to send out as fast as possible before the homebrew community does something extremely evil with the loophole. Maybe something will pop up in a while, but we’re just waiting for homebrewers to hack this new 3.71 as well.

The M33 guys managed to hack the PSP Slim and Lite Firmware. They found out a way to let the PSP Slim run the M33’s custom Firmware, it hass all the features of the 3.52 M33, but they had to leave the 1.50 kernel support out. That means that some of the homebrew software that was developed for the 1.50 Firmware won’t work with the custom Firmware. It’s pretty complex to install this M33 Firmware, first of all it requires a Pandora Battery, Pandora Memory Stick, a phatty PSP with the 1.50 Firmware on it. Real PSP geeks might want to try it out, but be careful with your piece of splendid PSP-2000 equipment!

Just a minute ago we posted the first exclusive PSP Slim and Lite hands-on impressions from Kotaku and now we have more first thoughts of the new PSP Slim and Lite. First of all the PSP Slimline system ships with Firmware 3.60 preloaded on the handheld. The menu has completely changed and two of the most important changes are:

USB Charge: Now you can charge via USB instead of via A/C
UMD Cache: You can save power by reducing the frequency at which the PSP Slim and Lite reads from your UMD game or movie.

There are also some new menu settings when hooking up your Sony PlayStation Portable Slimline Lite to your television. Via the Switch Video Output you can now watch movies, games, pictures on your TV screen from your PSP Slim/Lite. Your TV has to be of the 16:9 or 4:3 type to use this option. You can also install a screensaver on your PSP and you can set the timeout from 0 to 15 minutes.
