Child burned by PSP in his pants

PlayStation Portable, PSP, Sony, PSP Slim and Lite, PSP Slim&Lite, PSP Light, PSP-2000, PSP BatteryA kid was burned by a PlayStation Portable in his pocket at Warner Middle School in Farmington Hills. The 12 year old Harold Clay had a hole in his pants caused by the fire of the PSP. The school placed a lockdown so that emergency units could get through to help Harold, at the hospital he is being treated for his second-degree burn to the leg. Police are still investigating this accident, but according to the parents of the boy the PSP wasn’t even on. They are planning to contact Sony to see if more of these cases have been reported in the past.

  3. Tony February 7th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

I don’t live in Michigan, but that must suck ass for that kid.

  4. David February 7th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

    All Michigan?

    Coincidence? I think not!

Wow, that sucks. Get a Zune. PSP and iPods burn in your pocket. Plus Zunes are the new cool.

  5. Marine2171 February 7th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Schools are for learning, not playing games. PSP’s don’t belong in school and the school should have a policy on not bringing that kind of crap.

  6. toopers February 7th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    Marine2171, you are a douchebag.

  7. Bleh February 7th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Lol i got a psp accessories add thing on this page :P

  8. Poof February 7th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    Should have brought a mudkip.

Also - zune the new cool? Yay, a new product for the sheeple to moan over and to be outdated in 2 years!

  9. womanWritemyessay February 7th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Marine2171, how would that stop the thing from burning him in his pants? If we are going off on random tangents…

Cheese: How the hell is it so awesome?

  10. knucklesfan February 7th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Holy Hell. I’m from Michigan too.

  11. Therealjoe February 7th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Maybe they are designed to explode so sony can hold the world ransom.

Also the Playstation 3 is a small nuclear device.

    This explains the massive price.

  12. Just a dime? It's a crime February 7th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I always sneak my cans into michigan for the dime deposit. Last trip: $110.00 Thanks guys!

  13. Someone February 7th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Oh my, i’m from Michigan too.
I went to the Birmingham public schools, though. Just a stone’s throw away.

  14. MichiganAlso February 7th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

  15. wtf February 7th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

ok, also from michigan (New Baltimore, college in Ypsilanti), also Stumbling, wtf.

  16. Geordie February 7th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

I don’t understand why the school had to be placed on “lockdown” to get the kid out. Was Principal Skinner involved?

  17. James February 7th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

Marine2171… god forbid someone listen to music on their way to school or use the thing on their free time like lunch or break.

  18. Erica February 8th, 2008 at 12:00 am

I also live in Michigan. Weird. Also stumbling…Wayland/GR area….

That would totally suck. If my nintendo DS does that I’ll cry for a few reasons.

  19. EWOK DUNG February 8th, 2008 at 12:06 am

  21. theY4Kman February 8th, 2008 at 12:18 am

    Look at http://www.detroitnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080206/METRO/802060459/1361/UPDATE

The PSP didn’t catch on fire or explode. I’m guessing it just overheated…But what do you expect for such a small device with no heat dissipation?

Ah, Marine2721, electronics like that are usually against rules. But honestly, those rules are bogus. With a world growing in technology by the week, restrictions like that are, well, way too restricting.

By the way, it was my fire house that was called to attend. I wasn’t the one there, but I certainly got some laughs when our Chief got back.

  22. Josh February 8th, 2008 at 12:20 am

I live in the USA. That’s close to Michigan, right?

  23. MichiganAlsoAlso February 8th, 2008 at 12:39 am

    Do you know me?

  24. Matt Ellsworth February 8th, 2008 at 12:41 am

thats pretty nasty. Looks like the pic I saw the other day of a guy who answered his cell phone while it was plugged in and it burnt up.

  25. NoYouAllFail February 8th, 2008 at 1:02 am

Zunes can’t play Monster Hunter Freedom 2.

  26. Zero February 8th, 2008 at 1:16 am

All of us from Michigan? Battle Creek, here, also StumbleUpon. That’s…more than a little freaky.

Also, work in a video game store and have never seen this. Heck, I own two PSPs. They never even so much as get warm. That’s incredible weirdness.

  27. Garbeld February 8th, 2008 at 1:42 am

If I might guess, it’s probable that the people who aren’t from Michigan just aren’t as prone to comment, giving the impression that your entire state happens to be StumbleUponning this. =P

  28. MichiganAlsoAlso February 8th, 2008 at 1:47 am

I was gonna say that Garbeld.
    Cuz that’s totally true

  29. xearo February 8th, 2008 at 2:25 am

okay…ive had something like this happen to me before. i have a small background with electronics too…
if a power source has made a circuit, electrons are flowing through it. correct? i had a battery in my pocket once, along with my keys in the same pocket. they were on a caribeener thing, and the battery got wedged inside of it. it made a circuit, and the resistance of the metal increased enough to heat it up and it felt like my pocket was going to catch on fire. im guessing this kid had something to make another path for the flow, and it heated up rapidly and burned him.
    :-)

  30. Schitso February 8th, 2008 at 8:13 am

Hey, I be a Michigander as well. Middle-of-the-mitten area.
Some fun replies to other fun comments:
Fsck the Zune, iPod, and anything else with DRM crap on it.
School isn’t for learning, silly, it’s for brainwashing and boredom.
No, it’s still not okay to use the word “sheeple”.

  31. Josh February 8th, 2008 at 10:04 am

Why are only Michigan people posting on here? Ohhh… thats rights, its because Michigan sucks and you all wish you were somewhere else, so you escape to the internet. And by the way, this kid had to be doing something to the PSP for it to overheat like that - the battery doesn’t just burn up like that unless you are doing something to stress it.

  32. Joey February 8th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

I’m from Wisconsin.. does that count? (Yeah, it sucks just as bad).
Josh: he probably had it paused in the middle of a game.

  33. Panda Man February 8th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

I’d be willing to bet that the kid had a counterfeit battery. Counterfeit batteries do the same thing to cell phones.

  34. chris February 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    ds’s ftw :]

  35. Me too February 8th, 2008 at 4:33 pm

I happen to be from Michigan as well, but I am also from the city. I went to one of the other schools in the district though. I hope that’s covered in the warranty.

  36. Bob February 8th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Michigan also..is there a regional option in stumble upon?

  37. DC February 8th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

I don’t think it caught while fire while it wasn’t on. Maybe it was in sleep mode and they mistook it for being off - which I do all the time and lose a lot of game data that way :’( - but I doubt it was off and just spontaneously combusted. So the parents won’t look find much on that. But yea. I’ve heard of other people’s catching fire. Mine just sits there.

Off topic, but I wonder if the parents are secretly trying to scam Sony. Like I was reading on customerssuck dot com yesterday..

  38. alan February 8th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

there is something up here. I too am from michigan!

  39. Zaita February 8th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

There really aren’t that many people from Michigan who stumbled here. It’s just that those who are were more compelled to post.

    Like me for instance.

Half an hour away from Farmington Hills

  40. NotfromMichigan February 8th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

I think that the child had previously hacked a bank using said PSP, and wanted to destroy the evidence, It would have worked, too, if he hadn’t tried to light it while it was in his pocket! BTW, all children under the age of 13 are robots, that’s why they’re so loud, because their volumizer is broken

  41. undacova February 9th, 2008 at 1:36 am

    flint town in the house

  42. Anonymous February 9th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

OMG I’m from Ohio which is close to Michigan…Stumbling also…

  43. arth1 February 9th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Well, at least the kid now has learned that it can be really expensive to buy cheap 3rd party batteries. After the battery scandal about two years ago, Sony’s batteries are now the safest you can buy anywhere.

  44. someone who would kill Marine if he had her address February 9th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Marine, you are fucking stupid. Please die.

  45. Biff February 10th, 2008 at 5:58 am

It’s horrible, I’ve heard about it a couple of days ago. As a PSP owner it sounds really bad that I can get burned by my PSP…

  46. Darkfrost February 10th, 2008 at 6:39 am

It’s not the psp itself that explodes, it’s the battery.

It’s happened before, but normally with third party batteries or chargers.

    For example - http://www.funtechtalk.com/sony-psp-battery-explodes/

But it’s not very likely to happen at all, so don’t get all worried :)

  47. Corey February 10th, 2008 at 10:50 am

    Northeastern Michigan here.

  48. Twatty February 12th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Michigan ROCKS (also stumbling) Traverse City (Base of the tiny peninsula near the pinky)

  51. james becquart April 5th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

they can forget about contacting sony to see if it has happened before because even if it has sony will not tell them anything. their best bet is to try a little searching on the web. but not just google there is a search called dogpile.com that checks a whole bunch of the major search engine all at 1 go. i recommend using http://www.dogpile.com to try finding out some info. and if they do contact sony do it thru a lawyer don’t do it as an individual.

  52. Alvin April 10th, 2008 at 11:43 am

OMG! I’m from Asia, and was just stumbling and fell down. lol. I was searching for the PSP Slim and Lite and somehow got intrigued by the article heading. I own a PSP limited edition Champagne Gold, aaahh, its heavy. That’s why I was searching for the Slim and Lite. Oh, new. I hope the incident doesn’t happen to me or anyone else. Due to the others comments on battery packs and the “keys thing”. I sorta know what to avoid.

  53. herald April 17th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Man Harold and me are buds, i play ball with him at the Y, i was shocked when i heard about this, i was like dude i kno this guy

  56. richard not from michigan May 14th, 2008 at 5:09 am

    hey, i’m not 4m michigan, i’m from indonesia…

the logical reason why the psp blew is, the child put his psp beside his fire matches, so when he farting, it’s make it a perfect explosion…

    that’s cooll!!!!!!!!!

    you guys must try it…

  57. T-REDD June 18th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

I believe he got burned because just because the psp is off doesnt mean that the psp will not stop working. For example when you look at the time on your psp and it say 2:51 and you turn it off so later when you turn your psp back on and the time say 7:39 this means the psp was still in process

  58. Trev'AH July 18th, 2008 at 1:56 am

    to T-REDD
Yes, but you can also take out the Battery. and the PSP will still tell the correct time afterwards! So it really doesnt make a difffernce.
LOL but yeah thats pretty odd… he mustve did something to do the battery maybe?
    Oh well.
Hope it doesnt happen to me, well my pockets are too small anyway to fit a PSP haha ><

  59. hunter August 17th, 2008 at 3:40 am

i dont care but that kid is dumb bringing a fucking psp and having the psp in his pocket just to show off next time he better learn his leason
